The Restoration of Human Rights (ROHR) in Zimbabwe was formed in 2007 out of the need for the Zimbabwe Vigil to have an organisation on the ground in Zimbabwe to reflect the Vigil’s mission statement to fight for human rights and true democracy (free and fair elections) in Zimbabwe. ROHR is a non-political organisation committed to educating people to achieve real change in the form of justice, peace and freedom in Zimbabwe.

On Saturday evening, 28th November 2015, Restoration of Human Rights Zimbabwe (ROHRZ) Reading branch hosted a well-attended Christmas fundraising event at the local Spice Oven Buffet Restaurant.

The event started at 7:30pm with many people from the local community and their families, and friends from other ROHR branches attending. Also present were members of press and media who enjoyed the meals and held interviews with various members of Reading branch. There were no official speeches or interruptions as guests went straight on to their tables and made choices of their favourite meals and drinks. The in-house music made the atmosphere so pleasant and suitable for a chat amongst guests as they consumed their food. Deborah Harry, the treasurer of the branch made sure all guests were treated to a free soft drink courtesy of the branch.

The major aim of the event was to raise funds for members to have some form of education on human rights and how they could defend themselves when they experience compromising situations. There was a general view that some people were abused simply because they did not know their rights. With knowledge they were empowered to deal with abuse diligently and in turn able to help the communities they lived in. Material resources, training workshops and inviting qualified manpower needed funding hence the fundraising event.

By 11pm most members appeared to have had enough for the day and some transport arrangement were made for some to be ferried to their various destinations. There were greetings, hugs and smiles to mark the end of a memorable day.

The launch of the fifth Midlands branch was dominated by massive support from the region with Chairpersons from Birmingham, Leicester, Nottingham and Northampton present. Dignitaries from the National office, the North and Southern regions graced the occasion.

The grey and teary autumn weather outside the Jubilee centre was in complete contrast to the sizzling buzz of excitement inside the centre as evidenced by the warm heartfelt smiles of the comrades. The Bedford catering and organising team excelled themselves in the quality of the cuisine and music for the occasion. After an opening prayer from Birmingham Branch Chairperson Gladys Muduve the Interim Branch Chairperson Percy Chagwiza welcomed everyone to the city of Bedford and expressed his delight in being part of the formation of the newest ROHR baby. He asked members to provide the new branch with guidance as it develops.

This national fundraiser was an effective curtain closer for what has been arguably ROHR International’s most successful year since its inception in 2007.

In an activity filled year of ground breaking international chapter launches, a parliamentary hearing and national training for office holders, the job of successfully hosting the final fundraiser of the organisation fell to ROHR Slough Branch. The branch did not disappoint in shouldering this responsibility.

The night of celebration started with prayer by the host branch publicity secretary and master of ceremonies Tichaona Mofokosho who welcomed all the guests and outlined the programme for the night. He introduced Slough branch chair and national secretary general Patricia Masamba who expressed her gratitude to the guests for coming to celebrate this event. She introduced ROHR Reading branch chair Mr Nicodimus Muganhu, who explained to the guests what ROHR stood for as a human rights advocating organisation. He expressed his disgust with the brutality taking place in Zimbabwe and urged the human rights defenders to be support the national fundraiser as all the funds raised from the evening would be used to assist the Zimbabwe structures in standing up against the abuses that were taking place.

On 13th November 2015 the Zimbabwe Vigil together with its sister organization Restoration of Human Rights in Zimbabwe (ROHR) were back at the Willows Medical Centre in Nottingham for another protest against Dr Sylvester Nyatsuro and his wife Veronica. The Nyatsuros who are British citizens and been living in Britain for more than ten years are claiming that the illegal regime government of Zanu PF has given them permission to seize Mr Philip Rankin’s farm.

Scores of protesters who braved the chilly weather have condemned the racist seizure of the Rankin’s farm and have vowed to continue with the protests outside Nyatsuros’ clinic in Nottingham until the greedy doctor stops his hypocritical claim on Rankin’s farm. This illegal seizure of Rankin’s farm is just as illegal, unconstitutional, illegitimate and bogus as the government supporting it.
